A brief history of Brownsville began when the city of Brownsville was originally established late in 1848 by Charles Stillman, and was made the county seat of the new Cameron County on 13 January 1849. The resulting treaty of the Mexican-American War (The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo) established the Rio Grande as the border and also resulted in California, Nevada, Utah and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado all becoming part of the United States.
After Texas' annexation into the United States in 1845, and ongoing disputes regarding the Texas boundary, General Zachary Taylor was dispatched to establish a base at Point Isabel and construct an earthen fort directly across the river from Matamoros.

Charles Stillman started a transport company with Mifflin Kennedy and Richard King after the Mexican-American War, under the name of King, Kennedy and Co. The transport company bought up the Government's surplus steam boats which were used to ferry U.S. forces across the Rio Grande.

Boca Chica State Park is located in the Boca Chica Sub-Delta of the Rio Grande River near Brownsville, Texas, the park is a sandy peninsula that is separated from Mexico by the river, and the Brazos Santiago Pass detaches the park from the South Padre Island.
Brownsville is a definite two-nation travel destination with Matamoros a few steps away and two beaches, including the popular tourist destination of South Padre Island, less than half an hour away off the Gulf of city of Brownsville has quickly become one of the fastest growing urban areas in the United States and the Port of Brownsville is the economic hub of South Texas.

In May of 1865, the last land battle of the Civil War was fought and won by the Confederacy at the Battle of Palmito Ranch more than a month after the General Lee's surrender at Appomattox, VA. A hurricane in 1867 destroyed many wood framed buildings in Brownsville and Fort Brown.
Also visit the last battle of the Civil War at the Battle of Palmito Ranch, where weeks after the Confederate armies had surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, United States and Confederate forces clashed on the coastal plains east of the city. Technically the McAllen city limit does reach the Rio Grande River but most of the area is brush, with levies and part of the international trade zone where companies and logistic firms are set up. The only city that is literally ON the River is Brownsville.
Brownsville Texas has seen a steady rise in population over the resent years, because if its affordable housing, pristine beaches and low unemployment many are calling it their new home. Finding a moving company to handle your relocation may not be as simple as one would think. Because of its location being so far south Brownsville is not serviced buy all Discount Moving Companies.
Compared to the other large cities in the Valley (Brownsville, McAllen), Harlingen is more family-oriented, and while my colleagues think I have a long commute (I work in Alamo, a mere 32 miles away), we chose it over McAllen simply because the latter is a giant mall with too much chaotic traffic.
